Cost of living

The cost of living is what a household must spend to maintain a given standard of living in a given place: housing, food, transport, utilities and everyday services.

It is normally expressed as an index or an average, which means it is useful for comparing places and unreliable for predicting your own bill. Your housing choice and commuting pattern move the number more than the index does.
