Essential expenses

Essential expenses are the costs you cannot stop paying without a serious consequence: housing, utilities, food, transport to work, insurance and minimum debt payments.

The distinction matters because an emergency fund is measured against essentials rather than total spending. Cutting a holiday short is disappointing; losing your home is not an option.
