Minimum payment

A minimum payment is the smallest amount a lender requires each month on a revolving debt. It is calculated to keep the account current, not to clear the balance in a reasonable time.

On a credit card, a minimum payment is often barely above the interest, so the balance can take decades to clear. Paying more than the minimum is what changes the timeline.
