Hotel Cost Calculator

What a stay costs room by room, night by night, and what each traveller pays.

Accommodation is usually the largest line of a trip and the one with the most hidden extras: city tax, breakfast, parking, a resort fee and the difference between the rate you booked and the bill you pay.

Enter the rooms, the nights, the nightly rate and the extras, and this calculator shows the real cost per night, per person and for the whole stay.

The rooms cost $1,450, tourist tax adds $50, breakfast $280 and parking $90, so the stay totals $1,870. That is $374.00 a night rather than the $145 room rate, and $467.50 for each of the four travellers. The extras are $420, which is 22.5% of the bill, and breakfast is the largest of them at $280. Parking adds $90 without feeding anyone.

The room costs $630 and the resort fee adds $75, tourist tax $18 and parking $96, with $40 of one-off costs. The stay totals $859, which is $286.33 a night and $429.50 each. Extras are $229, or 26.7% of the bill, a higher share than the family example even though breakfast is left out entirely, because parking and the resort fee together cost more than breakfast did there. Skipping breakfast saved $84 on this trip.

Frequently asked questions

Is the nightly rate for the room or for each person?

It is the rate for one room for one night, which is how hotels quote it. The calculator multiplies it by the number of rooms and the number of nights. Two rooms at $145 for five nights is $1,450, and that is the room line before anything else is added.

The extras are the part that behaves differently. Tourist tax is charged per person per night, breakfast is per person per night, and parking and resort fees are per night for the stay rather than per person. That is why a party of four pays four times the tax and the breakfast on the same rooms.

Where does the tourist tax go, and is it per room?

In the tax field, as an amount per person per night. It is not per room, which matters as soon as more than one person shares a room. A city charging $2.50 a night adds $50 over five nights for a family of four, and only $12.50 for a single traveller.

Rates vary by city, by the class of the hotel and sometimes by season, and they are often collected on arrival rather than at booking. Check the local rate before you travel, because a nightly figure that looks small becomes a real line on a long stay.

Should I include breakfast even if I plan to eat out?

No. The field is the cost of breakfast as charged by the hotel, so leave it at zero if breakfast is included in the rate or if you intend to eat elsewhere. If breakfast is included, do not enter a figure, because the rate already contains it and adding it again would double count.

If you add breakfast, the per-person and per-day figures rise and the extras share rises with them. Comparing a room-only rate plus a cafe breakfast against a bed-and-breakfast rate is a good use of this page: enter each version and compare the total cost, not the nightly rate.

What is a resort fee, and why is it separate from the room rate?

It is a mandatory nightly charge that some hotels add for facilities such as a pool, gym, wifi or a shuttle, and it is quoted outside the room rate. Because it is compulsory, it belongs in the total, and the extras share line is there to show how much of the bill is not the room.

It also makes the headline rate misleading when comparing two hotels. A $210 room with a $25 resort fee costs $235 a night before tax, and a $230 room with everything included is the cheaper of the two. Compare the total cost per night rather than the advertised rate.
