Instagram Earnings Calculator

What a following earns from sponsored posts, affiliate links and a product.

Instagram pays almost nothing directly. The money comes from sponsored posts priced against reach, from affiliate links in stories and bios, and from a product or service the audience buys.

Enter your following, your reach and your rates, and this calculator shows the monthly total, the revenue per thousand followers and what a sponsorship and an affiliate post are each worth.

3.85 posts

The account earns $4,450.00 a month, or $53,400.00 a year, which is $74.17 for every 1,000 followers. Sponsorships bring $1,950.00, which is 43.8% of the total, and affiliate links bring $2,500.00 from 100 sales at a $25.00 commission. Engagement is 6.7% of reach and a sponsor pays $0.54 per engagement. Reaching a $5,000.00 month would need 3.85 sponsored posts at $650.00 after the affiliate income. All of this is gross, before the $200.00 of monthly costs and before tax.

5.98 posts

The total is $2,505.00 a month or $30,060.00 a year, which is $113.86 per 1,000 followers, higher than the larger account in the other example because of the product. The product brings $1,800.00, affiliate links $405.00 and the single sponsored post only $300.00, which is 12.0% of the total. A $4,000.00 month would need 5.98 sponsored posts at $300.00 after the other streams, which is a heavy posting load at this reach. The figures are gross, before the $350.00 of monthly costs and before tax.

Frequently asked questions

Where should the price per sponsored post come from?

From rates you have actually been offered or paid, not from a formula or from a list of rates for accounts of a certain size. Deals are priced against reach, engagement, where the audience is and what the brand has budgeted, so two accounts with the same number of followers can be paid very differently. Take the figure from your own dashboard, your own invoices or the last offer you received, and treat a single offer as one data point rather than a rate.

The revenue per 1,000 followers line is the figure to watch over time, because it shows whether the account earns more as it grows or merely gets bigger. Rate and payout figures vary enormously by country, topic and season, which is why this page makes you supply them rather than assuming them.

Does the calculator include payments from the platform itself?

No. Payments made by the platform itself are not estimated here at all, because they vary by country and change without notice. This page counts the three streams you control: sponsored posts at your own rate, affiliate commission, and a product you sell.

The totals are gross, before the costs of running the account and before tax. The revenue after costs line subtracts the monthly costs you enter, and tax is still to be paid on what remains. Keep your own records of what arrives from each source.

How does selling a product change the picture?

A product adds revenue that does not depend on a brand budget or a platform payout. In the second example 40 sales at $45 bring $1,800 a month from a following of 22,000, which is more than the sponsorship and affiliate streams together, and the account earns $113.86 per 1,000 followers against $74.17 for the much larger account in the first example.

What the calculator does not do is subtract the cost of making or delivering the product, beyond the monthly costs you enter. If each sale has a cost, subtract it from the price before entering the price, or add the total to the monthly costs.

What engagement rate should I be aiming for?

The calculator divides engagements by average reach rather than by followers, which is the stricter measure: it says how many of the people who saw a post did something. In the first example 1,200 engagements on a reach of 18,000 is 6.7%, and the second is 7.1% on a smaller reach.

No single figure applies to every account, and a rate that is high in one niche is ordinary in another. Track your own rate over several months and watch which formats move it, rather than comparing it with a number quoted for the whole platform.
