Social contributions

Social contributions are mandatory payments deducted from pay to fund state pensions, health care, unemployment insurance and similar systems. They are usually calculated as a percentage of gross pay and are separate from income tax.

In some countries they are labelled on a payslip as employee contributions, National Insurance or social security. They count towards the difference between gross and net pay.
